Koh Rong

About Koh Rong

Koh Rong is an island in the gulf of Thailand, 25km from the coast of Sihanoukville, With an area of about 78km squared, Kong Rong is one of the biggest islands in Cambodia, second only to the Koh Kong island. The island is mostly comprised of hills with a forest covering a majority of the island. Hidden away within the forest are estuaries, creeks and seasonal waterfall. Due to illegal logging, a large portion of the forest have disappeared. Outside of the forest are around 23 beaches of varying sizes, a majority of which have white sand.

Because of the lack of infrastructure, the majority of the island is underdeveloped. The Southeastern part of the island, where the main docking is, is the most developed part of the island. It is also right next to Koh Tuich, one of only four villages on the island. The other three being Doeum D’keuw, Prek Svay and Sok San village. Around the island, there are several islands nearby, some which are Koh Rong Sanloem, Koh Bong-Po’own and Koh Song-Saa.

Going to Koh Rong

The only way to get to Koh Rong is by boat. There are many private boats available for a reasonable price, given that your bargain skills are good. The trip to the island can take around 45 minutes with good conditions.

To get to Sihanoukville, where Koh Rong presides, there are plenty of ways to get there. The airport is operational so flying is an option. There are direct flights but there are also one with layovers that can take longer than going by bus so be wary of those. Buses are the best option for going to Sihanoukville. There are several companies that you can choose from such as Giant Ibis, Mekong Express, Bayon VIP and many more. Apart from them, there are private vans that you can rent for a very low price but they’re relatively unsafe and tend to drive over the speed limit a lot. A trip in your own car or motorcycle can be done but it requires a lot of skill as the road there is infamous for being very dangerous.
